Baltic Sea (Danish Waters)

CASE STUDY 5 – BALTIC SEA (DANISH WATERS)

Offshore wind production & marine biomass production & environmental remediation

Due to the high levels of eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, this Danish case study is focused on the combined use of offshore wind parks with mariculture (shellfish and/or seaweed) as a means to reduce nutrient levels (nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon dioxide) and improve overall environmental quality of the Baltic Sea water. The harvested biomass has great potential as nutrient and protein-rich animal feed, for bio-energy (biogas) or as fertilizer and while the potential of combining uses for nutrient removal is clear. The Danish pilot study from 2012 revealed a number of challenges and perspectives which will be addressed in this case study.
